Music and Us

Hello everyone, I hope you all have enjoyed the snow days as much as me. For this assignment, I automatically knew what cultures I wanted to include. My first thoughts were that I knew I wanted to include something from my own culture, especially since we didn't talk about it, and I wanted to include one of my favorite Spanish songs. With those two cultures in mind, I knew that they were both from North America, so I needed something from a different continent. I thought that I would also include some J-pop and some Afrobeats.       It would only be right to start off with a part of my own culture. Jamaica is a place that is warm and welcoming. I have been on trips a few times, and I got to see the town where my ancestors lived. Jamaica has a blend of African traditions along with European traditions. One thing I think is very interesting is the language of Jamaica. The main language there is English, along with Patois, or Patwa (I call it Patwa), and it's like a mix...

Music and Family

Hi, so for my family member, I decided to interview my mom. Just to give you a quick idea about my mom, she is very soft-spoken, but when she speaks, you need to listen up. I always refer to her as a quiet church mouse. When she agreed to do the interview, I was extremely thankful because I felt like it was a bit out of her comfort zone. My mom listens to so much music, like the radio when driving or on her phone while getting ready or while cooking dinner. I feel like some of the music I like is thanks to her.  Below is the video of the interview The first song she really speaks about is Brandy's "Have You Ever." I hadn't heard of this song until after the interview, and I looked it up.  The next song is from the movie Dreamgirls. She didn't specify any song, so I just put one of my favorites. (If you haven't watched the movie and you like musicals with amazing singing and jaw-dropping drama, you should definitely go watch it.) The last song is our go-to roa...

Music and Memory

When people think of songs from their childhood, they usually think of what they may have heard on the radio or perhaps on their favorite show. However, for me, it's entirely different. Many times, this was just a family thing, but instead of watching normal TV, we would watch music videos on On Demand. My two cousins, my brother, and I would gather around in the den and watch different music videos from various artists, ranging from Chris Brown to Lady Gaga to Michael Jackson. Some of the earliest memories I have of music are from watching music videos. The first song is one that really left a big impact on my friends and family. One of the main reasons I remember this song is due to the dancing. The more entertaining a video was, the more we would watch it over and over again. New Flame by Chris Brown was like the starter every time we turned the TV on. No one ever complained about your choice if you picked this. As a child, I would watch the whole video and sing and dance alon...

All About Me and My Music

Hello, my name is Nirro. Yes, that's my real name. It's my father's name backward; I'll let you figure that out yourself. I previously attended Limestone, and now I'm here. Round of applause. 👏👏👏 I'm currently a junior, and my major is music ed. My primary instrument is voice (soprano, though I really want to be an alto). I decided on my major relatively late; in middle and high school, I think I changed what I wanted to do about seven times. In 11th grade, I decided that I wanted to be a teacher, and in my final year of high school, I decided to pursue a career as a music teacher.       I really like almost all music; I'm down to give everything at least one or two listens. My favorite genre to sing is either jazz, pop, or R&B (I sing classical because I have to). While picking music to include in the post, it was almost impossible to find a song that I disliked because I can usually see what people might enjoy about a ...
